A monument of architecture of national importance (security number 668 N).
In Kremenets, the western side of the market is formed by the baroque complex of the Jesuit Collegium, and in the eastern side is the Cathedral of St. Nicholas (ancient monastery of Fr. Franciscans).
The Cathedral of St. Nicholas is the oldest architectural monument of Kremenets. It was built in the XVI century in the Renaissance style as a Catholic church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, and its construction is attributed to Bona Sforza, the owner of the Kremenets castle. In 1606, the temple was transferred to the Order of the Franciscans, who later built a large brick church and a two-story house. In the XVIII century. the complex from the side of the main street was supplemented by a two-tier baroque bell tower. It was also at that time that the temple underwent restructuring and got side naves and a narthex. It was a well-known missionary center of the city, which owned considerable land allotments. In 1832, the Catholic order of the Franciscans was banned, and in the same year, the building was re-consecrated as the Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas.
As the document of 1783 testifies, in Kremenets, there was a parish church of St. Nicholas together with the cemetery, hospital, and school. Initially, the temple was Orthodox, later – Uniate. In 1802, the temple burned down, and the parishes allocated three rooms on the first floor of the western wing of the Basilian Monastery, above the market square. In 1803, St. Nikolas’ Church became the cathedral – the main Orthodox church of the city. In 1832, the parish was moved to the ancient buildings of the Franciscan monastery.
The temple contains a rare bas-relief from the tree of St. Onufry of the XVIII century, bilateral processional icons of the XVIII century, an interesting central iconostasis painted on a tin of the second half of the 19th century, kyoto with icons of saints dating from the 19th century. A large bell is hung on the bell tower, made in Piarnu, Estonia.
Today, St. Nikolas’ Church is an architectural monument of national importance.
